Is shimming a toilet bad?
Is shimming a toilet bad?
Any movement of the toilet damages the wax seal. That leads to leaks and major repairs. To steady a rocking toilet, cut plastic shims to fit and slip them underneath (you may have to remove caulk before adding shims). But don’t crank them down super-tight; that can crack the toilet.
How do you cut plastic shims?
Bend the shim at the scored line to snap it off. Alternatively, you can cut off the shim with a multi-tool. If using plastic shims, bend back the shim and snap it off. It is usually not necessary to score the shim since plastic shims already are scored.
How do you shim properly?
How to Use Shims. Once a door or window is seated into the opening, place shims in any gaps between the window or door casing and the framed opening. Use a hammer or mallet to gently tap the shim into place, using a level to check that the window or door is moving toward plumb or level as desired.
Does toilet flange need to be perfectly level?
The optimum flange height to aim for is 1/4 inch above the finished floor. This typically allows for almost any type of wax ring to be used and still ensure a good seal. If you recently tiled or changed the bathroom flooring, the flange height is likely less than optimal.
