What is included in word count for essays?
Word count includes everything in the main body of the text (including headings, tables, citations, quotes, lists, etc). The list of references, appendices and footnotes2 are NOT included in the word count unless it is clearly stated in the coursework instructions that the module is an exception to this rule.
Is the essay title included in the word count?
For this reason, when you upload your essay, please include a cover page to include: essay title, your name and the word count. Footnotes are included in the word count. The bibliography is not.
How do universities count words?

Excessive and unnecessary self-citation (citing your own paper when some other paper would be more appropriate) is explicitly bad research practice. It is bad practice when you cite your own unrelated work even though it is not particularly relevant or the most recent/representative paper that could be cited.
Can you plagiarize your own work Turnitin?
Yes and no. Turnitin doesn’t catch plagiarized ideas – it only catches strings of similar texts. The general idea behind Turnitin was to check for matching text that is not original and is in any way plagiarized. It will identify the sources and then the hammer of justice can be delivered upon the culprit.
Can I submit my own paper to Turnitin?

Is 10 similarity on Turnitin bad?

Can turnitin count words in PDF?
Turnitin’s word count does not count the words in textboxes, footnotes, and endnotes. Turnitin will count each separate word within a URL, however a PDF or Word document will count a URL as one word.
Does Turnitin accept pages?
When ‘Accept any file type’ is enabled for an assignment, Turnitin will accept any file type submission as long as file requirements are met. The file size may not exceed 100 MB and 800 pages or fewer. Files of a larger size may be reduced in size by removal of non-text content.
